Counters & Statistics
Websites with statistics are full of numbers and social issues that can make for
amazing lesson plans and discussions! I once did a lesson on Shaq vs. Kobe Bryant using NBA stats that lasted for over 3 months.
During that time, the kids were completely engaged and I covered all of the standards I needed to cover. We even did
a "Are you a better free throw shooter than Shaq?" tournament where kids had to convert fractions to percentages.
Here
is a sample of some of the thought provoking questions that I've used to create math lesson plans:
Did you know that African-Americans are two and a half times more likely to live
in poverty?
Did you know
that women make less money than men in EVERY industry?
How many people do you think will die from AIDS today?
What is the crime rate in your neighborheard?
